Eternals

I watched Eternals and I didn’t like it. 2.5/5

Eternals, the latest addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, had lofty ambitions. Directed by Chloé Zhao, known for her visually striking and emotionally resonant work, the film promised to explore new cosmic realms and introduce a host of powerful immortal beings. However, while it certainly delivers on spectacle, Eternals struggles to find its footing in terms of narrative cohesion and character development.

Visually, Eternals is a feast for the eyes. Zhao’s direction, coupled with cinematographer Ben Davis’ stunning work, brings to life breathtaking landscapes and cosmic vistas. The celestial entities and their awe-inspiring powers are portrayed with a grandeur befitting their ancient existence. The film’s visual effects are a testament to the technical prowess of modern filmmaking.

The ensemble cast is undeniably talented, featuring heavyweights like Angelina Jolie, Salma Hayek, Gemma Chan, and Kit Harington. Each actor brings a gravitas to their respective roles, with Jolie’s fierce warrior Thena and Hayek’s wise and enigmatic Ajak standing out. However, with such a large ensemble, some characters inevitably receive more attention than others, leading to uneven development.

The central theme of Eternals, exploring the purpose and responsibilities of god-like beings towards humanity, is a weighty one. It attempts to delve into philosophical questions about free will, intervention, and the consequences of immortal existence. While commendable, the execution falls short of the depth the subject matter deserves. The film struggles to balance its grand ideas with the need for coherent storytelling.

The narrative structure of Eternals is one of its most divisive aspects. The film employs a non-linear approach, jumping back and forth across thousands of years to piece together the Eternals’ history. While this approach has worked well in other films, here it leads to a disjointed viewing experience. Pivotal moments lack the emotional impact they should have, as the audience is constantly shifting between eras and characters.

Characterization, another vital aspect of any superhero film, is where Eternals falters. With ten central characters, each with their unique abilities and histories, it becomes a challenge to give each one the depth they deserve. Some, like Sersi and Ikaris, receive more attention, while others, unfortunately, feel like afterthoughts. This imbalance leaves the audience with only surface-level connections to some of the Eternals.

The action sequences in Eternals are a mixed bag. Some, particularly those showcasing the Eternals’ individual powers, are visually stunning and creatively choreographed. The use of abilities like manipulation of matter and control over cosmic energy is visually arresting. However, the film stumbles when it comes to large-scale battles, which lack the same level of excitement and impact.

Despite its attempts to break away from the typical Marvel formula, Eternals ultimately succumbs to certain genre conventions. The obligatory CGI-heavy climax and a mid-credits scene designed to tease future installments feel like obligatory checkboxes rather than organic elements of the story.

In conclusion, Eternals is a visually ambitious yet narratively uneven addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. While it grapples with weighty themes and boasts a talented ensemble cast, the film struggles to provide adequate character development and maintain a cohesive narrative. Chloé Zhao’s vision is evident, but it’s buried beneath the weight of its own ambition. For fans of the MCU, Eternals offers moments of spectacle, but it may leave others wishing for a more focused and emotionally resonant experience.
